Food Production

Find out what the primary types of food that are produced in the Thar desert and how they are produced and a PQE on the vegetation quality in the Thar Desert!

In the Thar Desert, many types of food are made. There are both perennial and ephemeral plants. Perrenial plants are ones that can survive for many year whereas Empheral plants have a short life span. Crops like cotton, millet, wheat, oilseed, pulses, sugarcane, Caralluma, mushrooms and karif crops are the most common types of crops that are made in this desert. Mushrooms are made in plain, flat areas of the Thar desert. They form after rainfall, when the clouds break apart and the sun's rays warm the sand. Different fungi is grown in the form of mushrooms. However, not all the mushrooms that are grown there are safe to eat, so, the Thari people have learned how to identify which mushrooms are safe for eating. The people who live in the Thar desert say they make the mushroom taste like fried chicken curry.

Fun Fact: between 30-60% of the entire worlds cotton production is made in the Thar desert!

Kharif crops, also known as monsoon crops or autumn crops, are tamed plants that are learned about and harvested in IndiaPakistan and Bangladesh during the Indian subcontinent's monsoon season. This season goes throughout June to November depending on the area. They are grown in the summer season in the Thar desert and are then harvested around September.

Q: The parts in the east side of the Thar desert that is in Rajasthan has better quality crops than the part in Pakistan.  E: Around the furthest point south east of the Thar desert, the lowest quality of crops grow, despite being surround by good quality crops.
