A bunch of people going on a trip by camel in the Thar desert

More information about the Thar desert

The Thar desert is located in Rajasthan, India, however, it spreads into Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. It is the biggest desert in India, taking up just over 5% of the total land. Despite primarily being located in India, about 10% of the desert is in Pakistan. It is commonly known as the Great Indian Desert and takes up 205,000 km2 (79,000 sq mi). The average temperature in the Thar is 24-26 degrees Celsius (75 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer, but it can reach as low as 4-10 degrees Celsius (39 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). The mixture of the heat of the desert and the minimal rainfall means the desert is very scarce on water. The government has helped in some ways but it is very difficult to find water in the Thar desert. Despite this, it is the most densely populated deserts in the and home to many different species of plants and animals.

Average temperature in degrees Celsius of the Thar Desert over a year

Data Analysis

As seen in this bar graph, the average weather throughout the year is almost entirely consistent. Without knowing where the Thar desert is located, this graph tells us it is in the northern hemisphere as, despite the desert being hot all throughout the year, the Thar desert has it's peak heat points in the middle of the year, around May and June. This tell us that those months are going to be the summer period wherever the desert is located, showing that the Thar desert must be in the northern hemisphere. However, even though the average temperature peaks in summer, all year round, the desert is hot and arid. If we compare this to the average rainfall graph (click button to see), we can see that the amount of heat mixed with lack of rainfall creates a very harsh, dry environment.
